Order of the Discalced Carmelites

We, the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, embrace the religious life in friendship and service of Jesus Christ, in imitation of and under the patronage of the Virgin Mary, whose life of faith, simplicity and intimate union with Jesus and his mission, constitute for us the interior model. Our vocation aspires to union with God by the way of contemplation and apostolic zeal indissolubly united, and to the formation of a fraternal community as a sign of communion in the world. Prayer, which is a life of prayer and a prayer of life, is nourished by listening to the Word of God and the liturgy and with “the joys and hopes, sorrows and anxieties” of the Church and of humanity. It is a way of life of faith, hope and love. Ours is a religious family in the church that prays and teaches others how to pray. This is what our Foundress St. Teresa of Jesus has done through her life and writings. She is the fountain of our Spiritual Charism.

CARMEL IN TELANGANA & ANDHRA PRADESH A HISTORICAL SKETCH

Part I Efforts towards the Establishment of the Church (1971-1988)

The Carmelite life is a call to contemplative life of prayer and at the same time it is a call to intensive evangelization as be- queathed by St. Teresa of Avila, the reformer par excellence of the Carmelite Order.
Pope Paul VI in his discourse to the members of the O.C.D. General Chapter said, “Whenever the need of the Church demands the Discalced Carmelites should be ready to be parish priests where they have been contemplative monks in monasteries.”

Part II Efforts towards the Expansion of the Order (1988-2009)

After 15 years of untiring efforts towards the evangeliza- tion and establishment of the parishes and Christian communities, the missionaries started thinking about the expansion of the Order in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

FORMATION OF HOUSES

  • Aspirancy - At Kanuru, in the Diocese of Vijayawada.
  • Postulancy - At Choutuppal, in the Diocese of Nalgonda.
  • Novitiate - At Tenali, in the Diocese of Guntur.
  • Philosophate & Theologate- At Janampeta, in the Dio.
  • Part III Efforts towards the Creation of a New Province (2009-2011)

These three years in the history of our mission assume greater significance as they were years of transition from an indefinitive nature of the mission. The triennium had its objectives clear to shape the commissariat into a full-fledged province.

  • Establishment of all the Formation Houses in Andhra.
  • Defining The Membership.
  • Erection Of The New Province.

  • Part IV Province in its Upward Journey (2011-2015)

During this triennium new houses were erected as the Non-erected monasteries of the province namely at Choutuppal (San Juan Vidhya Niketan, 2013), Sarapaka (St. Theresa’s Monastery, 2013) & Srikakulam (St. Therese of Child Jesus Monastery, 2013). With this erection, the province has 10 Erected Monasteries and 3 Non- Erected Monasteries.
Whatever we are today, thanks to the tireless, selfless, cou- rageous and hardworking great missionaries from the Manjummel Province.

    SOCIAL WELFARE ACTIVITIES

As the people in this mission field were from socially and economically backward, Social welfare and development was a part of missionaries’ evangelization effort. So, the missionaries have been with the people in their struggle for survival and subsistence.
Following figures will explain our involvement in the social welfare of the people in the mission:

    EDUCATIONAL FIELD

Since educational facilities were lack- ing in most of the villages the missionaries started to bring the des- titute children from different villages to their parish head quarters and provided them with all facilities.
